Artist Statement
A brief introduction before you explore the rest of my page

I’m Jodie,
a DC artist whose relationship with
music started with curiosity. One of my
earliest influences can be traced back to when
I saw the “Heard Em Say” music video by Kanye.
Then during my high school years I found
influence in J Cole’s "Born Sinners” and
2014 Forest Hill Drive.
Later I found my artistic curiosity
evolving after attending
the Bowie State University
2016 Homecoming
as a BSU student.
There isn’t a deeper explanation as for why,
it just did and
I’m appreciative for it.
Over the years following
that moment I spent time
sharpening my pen,
strengthening my concepts
and discovering more
about myself as a person
through the music I make.
As my artistic journey developed,
I eventually reached a point where
I had to decide what was the next logical way
for me to invest in myself.
So I decided to cut back
on the amount of money that I
would put into studio sessions
and allocate those funds
towards getting equipment
so that I could record myself.
Looking back, that decision became a
pivotal point in my journey
because it gave me more independence
to cultivate my own process
and create on my own time.
Now I’m continuing to figure out
what feels authentic to me as a rapper.
One thing I’ve been exploring is how
to brag rap in a way that still feels like me,
rather than performing a version of confidence that doesn’t.
At the same time, I’m also forming
my next thematic project
and figuring out what I want
that body of work to become.
